Friday, Oct. 26 2018 by JasonA Review of The Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail
I'd read about the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail and heard it was a beautiful trail to ride bicycles, so my wife and I set out to check this off our "Been there, Done that" list. I spent some of my childhood in the area surrounding Lake Almanor which isn't far from the trail, but I couldn't recall ever visiting this area near Susanville.
According to the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) the Bizz Johnson Trail runs 25.4 miles from Susanville to Mason Station. Being that I'm not an avid athelete I thought it would be a good idea to start in Susanville and head up the trail, knowing that if I get too tired I could just turn around and coast back down hill. The trail was well maintained and included at least three bridges and a couple of cool tunnels, one of which was really long. During our 7 mile accent before we turned around we passed a few people on horse back, a few on foot, and a few on bicycle. Overall the trail was quiet. In fact, we expected to see some wild life. The trail followed the Susan River and it was far enough away from a population center, but surprisingly we didn't see a thing. In fact, during our trip we did see deer eating grass and relaxing in the yards of locals. Apparently the local wild life prefers human company.
Regarding Susanville, I remember watching the documentary "Prison
Town, USA" about Susanville. I thought it would be interesting to
see what the town was about. This
was a late summer weekend trip on a national holiday, so I was a little
surprised that last minute motel booking was easy and the town was not
busy. The area does offer an appeal for nature lovers, but the towns
appeal was not as one might hope. We had a nice discussion with a local bicycler, who seemed more
then willing to chat and offer advice on the good places to eat. The people are friendly and the trail is nice, so overall the trip was a good one.
I do recommend a visit to the Bizz Johnson Trail. The area surrounding Susanville has a lot of appeal and I wish the best to that community.
